Innovation to Preserve Our Traditions
To preserve and pass down Japan’s history, traditional culture, architecture, and other treasures to future generations, it is not enough to merely safeguard what already exists. We believe it is essential to continuously innovate and revitalize our machi, or local towns, to ensure their legacy endures.
After World War II, Japan achieved remarkable economic growth through its commitment to manufacturing excellence. However, as the framework of modern industrial society shifts, Japan—once driven by a manufacturing-based economy—is rapidly losing its momentum. Factors such as an aging population, declining birthrate, and the rise of emerging Asian economies have further diminished Japan’s global economic presence.
In light of these challenges, what should Japan aim for next?
We believe the answer lies in showcasing the unique natural beauty, culture, and traditions of Japan’s regional areas to the world. By sharing the rich heritage of our local towns, we can attract visitors from both inside and outside of Japan.
Our goal is to breathe new life into these towns, creating a cycle of revitalization where people gather, communities thrive, and younger generations feel inspired to return from urban areas. This positive spiral will help ensure a vibrant future for Japan’s regions.
To pass on the rich heritage of our towns to the next generation, it is not enough to simply preserve traditions. We must embrace creativity and innovation, adapting to the needs of the times while respecting our roots.
In essence, to remain true to our identity, we must continuously evolve.
