Originally launched in 2001, KURA is a monthly magazine created as a lifestyle and culture publication for adults in the Shinshu region. The name “KURA” is derived from the traditional Japanese storehouses used to protect treasures and valuable food, symbolizing the magazine’s mission to preserve and share the cultural and historical assets of Nagano.
KURA has long been cherished for its high-quality content on local tourism, community development, and culinary traditions. However, in response to the growing shift towards digital media, the print edition was eventually discontinued. In June 2022, we acquired the business from its former publisher, inspired by the voices and sentiments of many who wished to see KURA continue its legacy of showcasing the best of Nagano over the past 20 years.
After careful consideration of how to carry forward the role that KURA has played as a compass for Nagano, we are proud to announce the launch of “KURA Online: A Lifestyle and Travel Magazine for NAGANO.”
Through this new platform, we hope to offer residents a fresh perspective on their local community and inspire visitors to discover the richness and depth of Nagano—encouraging them to stay longer and perhaps even call it home. For the launch, we have published guides under three main themes: “Travel,” “Hot Springs,” and “Mountains.” Moving forward, we will continue to feature curated content on themes such as relocation and accommodations, as well as explore the unique charm of all 77 cities, towns, and villages throughout the prefecture.
We hope you enjoy the all-new KURA Online, your trusted source for the best of Nagano.
